On 25 December 2003, while travelling through Iran, I visited the 2600 year old Citadel of Bam (Arg-e Bam).  At 5.26am the following morning, Bam was affected by an earthquake measuring 6.5 magnitude on the Richter scale. More than 26,000 people lost their lives and a large part of the town was destroyed including old and new structures.  The damage to the historic mud brick Citadel was extensive.  In 2004 UNESCO inscribed Bam on the List of World Heritage in Danger.
